Survival Kit

Do you live in an area where there are a number of hurricanes or earthquakes? If so, it’s very important for you to have a survival kit ready to use in case of emergency. Here are some of the things that you should include in the kit, as well as some other safety tips that you should take into consideration.

Make sure that you include enough clean drinking water in your survival kit. You should make sure that there is enough water for each member of your family to drink. One gallon of water should be allotted per person per day, and you should pack extra water for any pets that you may have. If the water has been sitting for a while, it’s a good idea to have some bleach on hand to disinfect the water.

There should also be a number of perishable foods in your survival kit. Canned goods are ideal for this purpose, since the food in these cans will last for months. Make sure that you have a variety of foods to stock in your kit, so that you and your family can get the proper nutrition. Don’t forget to pack some vitamin supplements as well, so that your family will still be nourished, even in an emergency.

Other toiletries should also be included in your survival kit. Things like soap, toilet paper, and plastic garbage bags should be a part of your kit, and you should make sure that each member of your family has a toothbrush and washcloth as well. You need to make sure that you’re able to maintain daily hygiene even if you don’t have water supply, so keeping a few water bottles on hand for washing and bathing is ideal.

Basic cooking supplies should be a part of your survival kit. A propane camp stove, matches, aluminum foil, and a few small pans can be stored in a Tupperware basin, which means that you can find more of a variety of dehydrated or canned foods to prepare if you’re not able to get to a stove. Basic tools like a knife, wrench, and hammer can be stored with the cooking supplies. Putting a flashlight in the kit will ensure that you’ll be able to see if the electricity goes out, and you should pack some additional batteries as well.

Additional clothes and blankets are also a must for your survival kit. You can get the whole family involved in this process by allowing each person to choose a ‘comfort’ item to include in the kit in case you have to evacuate your home for any reason.
